Walking (2022)

This is a sketch I did in pen for one of my lessons with my art tutor. I was encouraged to try a different process of illustrating the human figure. My tutor had found an urban sketching YouTuber online, Sketching Scottie, who I already knew of from doing my own research. I hadn’t tried his method of drawing people, so we decided to try this in the lesson. Usually, I draw the body using certain building blocks I have developed over time: a set of reliable shapes I like to use as a foundation for my figure drawings. However Sketching Scottie illustrates the human figure by outlining the overall shape of the body and then working inside this outline to add the details. This was a really refreshing method to try and, although I still like to build foundational structures for more polished illustrations like my stickers, I do like to use Scottie’s approach when I am doing looser meditative sketches.
